Restylane®, a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler, is used to restore fullness to the skin and eliminate facial folds and wrinkles. A filler is a gel or paste that can be injected beneath a wrinkle or crease to camouflage its appearance. The most recognizable filler is collagen, which comes from an animal source. Restylane® is made up of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the body. Restylane® is non-animal based, virtually eliminating any risk of disease transmission or allergic reaction.

Popular Restylane Questions (FAQ)

What areas of my face can be improved with Restylane®?

Almost any area of the face can be improved with Restylane®. The most common areas treated is the nasolabial folds or smile lines, the lips, the cheeks, and the crease between the eyebrows.

What improvements can fillers make in my lips?

Some patients desire slightly fuller more natural and youthful lips. There are a number of safe and very effective fillers, including Restylane®, that can be used to plump up any part of the lip. In addition, placing fillers along the border of your lip allows the filler to enter into the fine vertical lines above and below the lip, providing a dramatic improvement in these areas as well.

What improvements can be made in my cheeks?

As we age, our cheeks tend to drop, creating deeper grooves between the nose and the mouth and at the corners of the mouth. We call these nasolabial folds, oral commissure, and marionette lines. Fillers can be placed under the skin surface to soften these grooves and decrease the shadowing, resulting in a natural rejuvenated appearance.

Is Restylane® safe?

There are a number of wrinkle filler options currently available. All provide safe and reliable results. The type of filler material selected by you and your doctor will depend on the location of the area you are treating and your individual goals. Your doctor will help you select a product that is right for you. At Soma Medical Spa, we use only FDA-approved fillers and will keep you informed on new products as they emerge.

How long will Restylane® last?

Restylane® results are immediate and expected to last between 6–9 months. An individual may need 2–3 injections per year. Evidence has shown that having a touch-up treatment before the product is fully dissipated will enhance the lasting effect.

How is Restylane® placed?

Restylane is injected in the office and takes only a few minutes to complete. We use a variety of numbing medicines to maximize your comfort during the procedure. All fillers are placed directly under the skin using fine needles and gentle pressure. BOTOX® Cosmetic is usually the best treatment for the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), but deep creases in this location may also require a filler like Restylane® to achieve the best results.

What should I expect after my Restylane® treatment?

You can usually expect some minor swelling and redness in the area of the injection that lasts for up to 24 hours. Cool compresses are immediately applied in the office before you are discharged, and we encourage you to continue using compresses intermittently for around 24 hours. It’s rare for patients to experience pain in the area, and bruising is usually minimal. You can apply makeup the same day as the injection. There are no activity restrictions after having your procedure.

How should I choose my surgeon?

All of the currently available filler substances are safe and effective. For the best results, however, go to a surgeon who has the most experience in selecting the correct substance and injecting this into the proper position. Be sure your surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the facility is fully accredited.
